Sometimes I run the bases
Just for fun
Swinging at pitches
That will never come
Still my bat goes SWACK
Home Run!
Except I’m scared to leave the box
Afraid
I might trip over gravel and rocks
I’ve memorized the shape
of a diamond
I want to shine!
Be brave
Off towards first I race
against timing
“Be aggressive!” they tell me
“But not too much!” they yell at me
“Take chances!”
Until I get picked off
Trying to stretch a single
Into a double
Then I’m in trouble
Even if I make it safely
On my feet
Sliding to avoid the tags
Placed upon me
Dusty and dirty
Scraped knees
Still only halfway home
Stranded
Hard to score when you have to
Rely on someone else
To drive you in
The coaches calls aren’t getting through
Or maybe it’s because
I never learned how to read the signs
I wanna run!
But if I take off at the wrong time
I’ll get blamed for being reckless
Careless
Dares marred by lack of
Situational awareness
In all fairness
I understand what’s at stake
You either win
or lose
Either last of first place
The rundown
is that there’s no in between
A tough pickle
You’re either the hero
Or the donkey
I wanna be the workhorse
The GOAT
The reason why my team hoists the trophy
Great memories when my name is spoke
“You the real MVP!”
“Bless you!”
“Can you sign my shoes?”
Steal!
Stealing is good
As long as they don’t catch you
This time I caught ’em sleeping
Now home is within reach
This victory will be so sweet
After all the pop ups
Fouls and ground balls
Out calls
Perils and pitfalls
I’m merely feet away
From being safe
I can see the plate
The probability of swiping home
Is zero to none
But if I wait too long to run
The game will never be won
Fortune favors the bold
Opportunity!
This is my chance to be a champ
Not a chump
I close my eyes
Blind to the odds
And SPRINT!
Life on the line
I DIVE!
SAFE!
Triumph!
Sometimes I run the bases
Just for fun
Swinging at pitches
That will never come
